For most of my adult life I had been in a relationship, so when things fell apart in 2012 the chance for a restart (of sorts) came. Or least, that was how I saw it.
I realised that I had never been truly alone and hence, went on several solo trips the past year, and explored places such as Indonesia’s Bali, Thailand’s Bangkok, and Hong Kong, all of which are not that far away from where I am based, which is Singapore.
Bali, Oct 2013
The solo travels were good; I never thought I would really like it, but having done so, found it to a very liberating experience – I could get up and go at any time I wanted, go on hikes, eat whatever I fancied, at whatever time I wanted.
Having flooded my friends’ Facebook/ Instagram/ Twitter feeds with pics and more pics of some of the most amazing dishes I have tasted, on top of the places I explored, I thought, why not just document everything since I am kind of doing so already?
Hence, here I am.
Besides eating (and being part of a whisky-loving group), I also discovered I really like running. At this present moment I am 36 years old and my knees are kinda giving way but for this year I have signed up for four half marathons, and I will be taking part in the first four days from now (cue heart palpitations and sweaty palms.)
Why running, you might ask?
I don’t believe in dieting. I think it’s stupid. Why restrict your food intake when all you have to do is burn it off? That said, I DO believe in moderation. And this applies to eating, exercise… and erm… pretty much everything in this lifetime, no?
I started running only last year – in fact, on 1/1/2013 – I ran the first 2 km of my life in this decade (snigger).
I almost died. And stopped for a while. Such a wuss. Friends then badgered me to keep at it, and so, after having signed up for my first 10 km run (Shape Run – thank god it was postponed to October due to the haze) I re-started the whole running thing in August.
Yep – you read that right. Between January and August I did NOTHING.
Don’t get me wrong – while I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle I had been a member of California Fitness gym since 2003 but only really went there to 1. use the loo 2. use the lockers to drop off shopping bags 3. halfheartedly attend Body Combat/ Body Pump classes.
Having signed up for that first run I knew I had to really start running, notwithstanding the lungs burning, muscle aching torture my body went through the first few weeks.
I actually completed my first half marathon on Dec 1, despite clocking a dismal time of 2: 37 hr (I was running with a fever… and yes I probably shouldn’t have done that….)
I am hopelessly addicted to fitness now. Love. Every. Nanosecond.
This blog would thus be a tracker (of sorts) for myself, as I embark on the second half of my life, eating, exploring and exercising.
Hope you enjoy reading this, as much I know I will enjoy tasting and burning it off on my runs and other silly rubbish.
Coming up in 2014 – runs would include : HMs (2XU, Run350, Sundown, Trifactor and Great Eastern), and the Green Corridor Run. So looking forward to these!
Till the next bite and run
