For a woman my size you would be surprised that I don’t eat sweets. There are several reasons for this, but thankfully there are still many things I can eat.
When I first learnt how to cook a sage said to me: Start with something you like to eat, and go from there. I suppose that is why I cook a lot of soups and congee.
But baking is an altogether different cup of tea – as mentioned, I don’t really eat sweets/ desserts as
- I am (tragically) allergic to cocoa;
- I am allergic to dairy products and…
- Recently discovered I can’t really eat eggs unless they are fully cooked (goodbye eggs benedict. *sobs)
So I don’t bake that often. When I do, it’s like a bomb was set off in the kitchen because I just can’t wing it, and follow recipes, down to the milligram.
Somehow or rather , something always goes haywire. But thankfully today the cake did turn out okay, but there was again some drama.
Today, I learnt that….
- When you are melting cheese over a hot water bath, choose your bowl wisely. THE DARN MIXER GOT SO STUCK TO THE POT THAT R HAD TO BE ACTIVATED TO RELEASE IT.
2. Know thy icing sugar.
Was given a mould for sprinkling icing sugar as decoration atop cakes. I tried. Came out dismally so blew it away (and learnt that icing sugar is NUTS AND IT GOES EVERYWHERE. I KID YOU NOT!)
Ended up with this.
Seems to be a success though!
Will continue to practise this week; I have actually signed up for a continental bread baking course on Tuesday, so hopefully I can deliver some dough (punny, I know!) for the Macmillan Coffee Morning I am organising with OutKlass Fitness on 19 Nov, to raise funds for cancer support.
Please pray for me, that I can bake… and not kill anyone in the process!
